The Margin will never be the hero of your reading life. You are. Our whole job is to walk a few steps ahead, point out what's easy to miss, and hand the text back to you, until the day you don't need us at all.
If you've ever felt like a stranger to a book you're supposed to know, you are not alone, and you are not the problem. Most of us were handed proof-texts, highlight reels, and other people's conclusions. We were handed the about. We were never handed the how.
So the most consequential book in the world sits on millions of shelves, owned and unread, while the people who own it quietly assume the reading must be for someone more qualified. That's not a failure of your devotion. It's a failure of method, and method can be taught.
The Margin exists to teach it back to you. To prove, one careful reading at a time, that the book rewards your attention more than almost anything else could, and that you are entirely capable of reading it yourself.
Why “The Margin”
Real reading has always happened in the margins, the white space beside the line, where readers for centuries wrote their questions, their objections, their small astonishments. That's where the text stops being someone else's and becomes yours.
It's also a promise about your time. This is written in the literal margins of a full life, and it asks for the same from you. Not the center of your week. Just the margin, ten minutes at a time. We'll meet you there.
No clutter, no upselling, no posting to stay “top of mind.” When a reading lands, it's because it's ready, and worth your ten minutes.
The goal is your independence, not your dependence. A good margin note leaves you a slightly better reader, able to find the next thread without anyone's help.
We read closely because the words matter, and we read toward a Person. The point is never the cleverness of the reading. It's where the reading leads you.
The Margin is written by one ordinary person who reads Scripture slowly every morning and couldn't stop turning those readings over. It isn't the work of an institution or a committee. It's the overflow of a daily practice, lightly edited and handed on to you.
That's on purpose. You're not being addressed by a curriculum. You're reading alongside a real person thinking out loud in the margin, the same margin you'll be reading in. If a note ever sounds too polished to be honest, we've gotten it wrong.
