You'll learn to read it.

Reading along with The Margin isn't a course to finish or a system to master. It's four old habits you pick up by watching them used — habits that turn a familiar text strange again, which is the only way to really see it. Here's what you'll learn to do, and here's exactly what it looks like on a real passage.

You'll read slowly

Speed is the enemy of Scripture, and you'll learn to resist it. The verse you used to skim is usually the one doing the work: the genealogy, the aside, the question left hanging in the air. You'll learn to linger there, and find that the slowness isn't a delay before the meaning. The slowness is the meaning arriving.

You'll read closely

You'll start reading as though it was written on purpose, because it was. You'll catch the repetition, the contrast, the word that's almost-but-not-quite a synonym, the name that appears where it shouldn't. Close reading is really just refusing to let familiarity do your seeing for you, and it makes an over-known passage new in your hands.

You'll read in context

Every book has a genre, a moment, a shape. A psalm is not a proverb; a letter is not a law; a parable is not a police report. You'll learn to ask what a passage meant before you ask what it means for you: who wrote it, to whom, and why. Context isn't homework. It's the difference between hearing and overhearing.

You'll read it yourself

The goal is never that you trust us. It's that you close the note, open your own Bible, and find something we never pointed out. We'd always rather teach you to read than tell you what to think, so the day you don't need us is the day this worked.

See it for yourself.

Here's a passage you've almost certainly heard and almost certainly never read. The text on the left; the margin on the right. Read it slowly, and notice how much was waiting in a poem you thought you knew.

Psalm 23 · 1–4

1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Note · genreThis is a song, not a doctrine. Read it the way you'd read any poem, for image and music, not just propositions.

Read in context. We've mostly met Psalm 23 at funerals, in a soft voice, on a card. But it was written by a shepherd-king who knew exactly how much a sheep can't be trusted to look after itself. The comfort isn't sentimental. It's the relief of being managed by someone competent when you are not.

Note · the turnWatch the pronoun. Verses 1–3 say He. Verse 4 says You.

Read closely. For three verses God is spoken about: He makes, He leads, He restores. Then the valley arrives, and the grammar breaks: “you are with me.” The psalm stops describing God and starts speaking to Him. It's in the dark valley, not the green pasture, that the song turns to face Him directly. That switch is the whole poem.

We won't pull a verse out of its passage to win you over to a point. A line means what it means inside the paragraph, the chapter, the book, and that's where we'll keep it, so you can trust what you read.

No performance

This is teaching, not a show. The only measure that counts is whether you opened your Bible afterward, not whether anyone applauded.

No gatekeeping

You don't need seminary, the “right” translation, or a particular tradition to belong here. You need a text and a little patience. Everything is free, always.
